Inkscape vs Illustrator: How to Choose an SVG Editor
There is no single best SVG creator for every file. Choose Inkscape or Illustrator by the four operations your work actually requires: node editing, live text, physical units, and the final export format for the target workflow. Both are general-purpose vector editors; neither guarantees that any arbitrary SVG passes a downstream strict subset.
The evidence below separates retained native Inkscape records from official-documentation descriptions of Illustrator. Inkscape 1.4.4 native records are dated 2026-10-09 with limited fixtures; Illustrator capability claims come from Adobe help pages and were not tested side by side here. This is not a fresh benchmark of either editor. TraceDXF has two separate tools: a browser-only monochrome raster boundary tracer for PNG/JPG/JPEG, and a strict SVG-to-DXF converter for already prepared geometry; neither is a general vector editor.
Inkscape vs Illustrator at a glance
| Task | Inkscape | Illustrator | Evidence status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Node / anchor editing | Node tool selects nodes and handles; moving them changes path geometry | Direct Selection adjusts individual anchor points and segments | Inkscape docs + retained native simplify fixture; Illustrator docs only |
| Live text | Text tool enters live text; editable text and path geometry are different representations | Type tool adds editable text to vector artwork | Docs comparison only, not a side-by-side test |
| Units | Document Properties changes page size and units; page border is not necessarily artwork bounds | Ruler units are configurable; ruler display is not the same as exported geometry dimensions | Docs comparison only |
| SVG export | Save a Copy recommended; retain the original Inkscape SVG; Plain SVG is one available export format | File > Export > Export As > SVG; documented options for Styling, Font, Images, Decimal, Responsive. Responsive writes no absolute size values, which matters when you need mm in the handoff file. Fonts can be outlined; images embedded or linked. | Both official docs descriptions; neither is a native export test here |
| DXF export | DXF R12/R14 export options; official R14 extension options units=mm, POLY=true were recorded | DXF/DWG export documented with unit scale, text outline and appearance-editability choices | Inkscape native record 2026-10-09; Illustrator docs only |
What the retained Inkscape records actually show
The only retained native software records in this comparison are from Inkscape 1.4.4 on 2026-10-09. One recorded R14 export with units=mm and POLY=true produced a 100x70mm file with 3 closed LWPOLYLINE entities, and a native command-line reopen also reported 100x70mm. The raw DXF was AC1014; an internal ezdxf upgrade to AC1015 is not the source version.
A separate simplification fixture changed 2548 nodes to 210 after one Simplify action and 31 after three actions. Bounds shifted from 100x100 to 100.02942489406834x100.04111777226167 mm and then to 99.88939187887635x100.0520346537387 mm, so repeated simplification visibly changes shape. These are narrow earlier examples, not tests of the new editor-check file below.
The common editor-check file and its geometry-only counterpart
Use this prepared file as a neutral fixture rather than as proof of either editor. editor-check.svg declares 80x50mm and contains an outer rectangle, a rectangular hole, editable live text L, and two fill colors. A strict SVG parser flags and omits live text, so the live-text version is not directly exportable to the supported geometry-only DXF subset.
The prepared counterpart substitutes a polygon L drawn manually instead of a font outline. It preserves the two colors and contains 3 closed geometry contours. It was manually authored, not exported from a native editor, so the polygon L is not evidence of text-to-path conversion.
The prepared supported file can export 3 closed LWPOLYLINE entities at 80x50mm. DXF layer 0 carries no color metadata, so preserve color and editable text in the SVG master. Outlining text is reversible in your file history only if you keep the live-text master; outlined text loses normal text editability.
Reader-run checks to perform in your own editor
These steps are for you to run in the editor you are evaluating. They are not claims that this page performed them.
- Open the editor-check SVG and move one node on the outer rectangle; inspect that the closed contour updates as expected.
- Edit the live text L, then measure both the declared 80x50mm page bounds and the outer artwork bounds with your ruler.
- Save an SVG copy using the actual export option in your app, reopen it, and confirm the geometry and declared dimensions survive the round trip.
- Run the supported prepared geometry-only SVG through the strict SVG-to-DXF tool, reopen the DXF, and verify bounds and contour count.
How export scope affects downstream use
Keep an editable master for ongoing design. Use a separate outline or geometry-only copy only when the target format requires it, then verify the output. Inkscape documentation recommends Save a Copy for exports and retaining the original Inkscape SVG because most export formats do not support all features. Illustrator documentation lists DXF/DWG unit scale, text outline, and appearance-editability choices, but those are documented options, not local tests here.
Neither editor's documentation means every arbitrary SVG passes a strict downstream checker. Current TraceDXF behavior blocks DXF download if any source element is not checked, rather than silently exporting a subset. A parser diagnostic may enumerate partial entities, but that enumeration is not a usable complete output. For multicolor artwork, plan to retain color in the SVG master; the strict SVG-to-DXF converter treats color as geometry-only and discards it, and DXF output on layer 0 does not carry color metadata.
Where each editor fits
- Choose Inkscape if your workflow centers on an open desktop editor with node tool, live text, document units, Plain SVG export, and documented DXF R12/R14 options, and where the retained 2026-10-09 R14 sample record is relevant. Verify specific exports against your own target because most export formats drop some features.
- Choose Illustrator if your existing team or asset pipeline already uses it. Its Direct Selection, live type, configurable rulers, and DXF/DWG export options are documented, but this page has no native Illustrator version or test record.
- For monochrome raster boundary tracing, use a dedicated image-to-SVG or image-to-DXF step before further editing. TraceDXF's raster tracer handles a single locally selected PNG/JPG/JPEG with no network upload and no account, output is monochrome only, and you can choose a source-pixel canvas or an explicit physical size. For already prepared geometry, use the separate strict SVG-to-DXF converter; color is discarded in geometry-only output.
