DXF imports blank or missing lines: find the first failing stage
Keep the original file. First establish what it contains, then check how the receiving application displays and processes it.
Check the entity inventory before changing export settings. An empty view is not proof of an empty file: unsupported objects, off-screen geometry and preview settings require different fixes. Compare a known normal file in the same application.
Separate the symptoms before editing geometry
No supported geometry means that this checker found no usable LINE or LWPOLYLINE geometry. A valid file can still contain TEXT, SPLINE or ELLIPSE objects. A partial report never proves those objects are absent.
Use the branch matching your symptom. The checks below do not automatically repair a file or change its contents.
| What you observe | Check first | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| File is rejected or will not open | Exact error, file type and export origin | Re-export a separate copy from the source application; a parser error is not a view setting |
| File opens, but entity inventory is empty | Whether the intended objects were included in the export | Check selection/export scope in the original design |
| Checker finds no supported geometry | Unsupported entity warnings and source object types | Inspect or convert the relevant objects in software that supports them |
| Objects exist, but the drawing area is blank | View extent, model/layout space and layer visibility | In AutoCAD, try Zoom Extents and inspect layers before re-exporting |
| Some lines are present, other objects are missing | Entity types in the original and exported copies | Locate the first missing object; do not assume the supported portion is the whole drawing |
| Editor shows shapes, but processing preview omits them | Application preview selection, mode and simulation position | Use that application’s preview diagnostics; this is distinct from a missing DXF entity |
Work from the file to the view in five checks
Preserve the source and error
Keep an untouched original and work on a copy. Record the source application, export version and receiving application. If opening fails, retain the exact error rather than calling the file empty.
Compare entity inventories
Check source object properties and the export. This site reports its strict ASCII 2D subset; unsupported warnings remain unresolved. Empty ENTITIES, unsupported-only content and incomplete code/value pairs are different cases, as the samples show.
Test display before discarding objects
For an AutoCAD drawing with objects present, check Zoom Extents, model/layout space and layer visibility. Autodesk documents Fusion DXFs whose geometry sits outside the initial view. Do not rescale geometry merely to make it appear on screen.
Resolve only the unsupported objects
Prepare text as glyph paths or convert unsupported curves in suitable software, using the linked guides. Reopen the saved copy and check entity types, dimensions and intended closure. Keep the original curves and editable text separately.
Separate preview-only failures
In LightBurn, overlapping duplicates on a Fill layer, Cut Selected Graphics and the simulation time slider can omit visible artwork from Preview. These documented preview cases do not explain every blank DXF import.
Download six files with different expected outcomes
The first five are self-created DXFs declaring millimeters; the sixth intentionally has an incomplete code/value pair. The normal control is a closed 100 × 70 mm rectangle. None was imported into AutoCAD or LightBurn for this guide.
The mixed file’s 100 × 70 mm bounds cover only its supported LINE/LWPOLYLINE objects; its TEXT and SPLINE sit outside that area. A blank bounds cell below means unavailable, not zero-sized or empty. Download the record for parser outcomes and file hashes.
| Download sample | Entity inventory | Strict checker result | Supported bounds (mm) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Empty ENTITIES DXF | No entities reported | No supported geometry; read the warnings | Unavailable |
| TEXT-only DXF | 1 TEXT | No supported geometry; read the warnings | Unavailable |
| SPLINE-only DXF | 1 SPLINE | No supported geometry; read the warnings | Unavailable |
| Mixed-entity DXF | 1 LWPOLYLINE + 1 LINE + 1 TEXT + 1 SPLINE | Partial: TEXT/SPLINE are not checked | 100 × 70 |
| Normal 100 × 70 mm DXF | 1 LWPOLYLINE | Within the supported 2D subset | 100 × 70 |
| Intentionally malformed DXF | No entities reported | Rejected: incomplete code/value pairs | Unavailable |
Read a partial report without losing the rest of the drawing
A supported rectangle in the mixed sample does not make the whole file supported. This checker does not render unsupported text or curves, diagnose layer visibility, recover missing content or repair corrupt files. Use the original application for those tasks.
Use the size guide only after identifying which objects were measured. Use the text, spline or ellipse guide for object preparation; use the LightBurn diagnostics when the file’s contents exist but its preview differs.
Sources and verification
The display and preview branches follow Autodesk and LightBurn documentation. Download outcomes were produced by the project’s strict parser and an independent DXF parser on 2026-10-15. Engineering fixtures are CC0; external-software display and machining results are untested.
