Prepare a monochrome logo or silhouette for SVG or DXF
Clean the source before tracing, preserve the details that define the mark, and verify the output as geometry. This workflow is for simple one-color shapes, not every logo file.
Use a high-contrast monochrome source, remove unrelated background objects, trace the filled regions, and inspect the smallest hole, bridge and separate part before exporting. Convert text to outlines in a desktop editor when needed; this project does not recognize lettering or preserve multicolor branding automatically.
Decide whether the logo fits this workflow
A logo can be a simple filled mark, outlined text, a multicolor illustration or a photograph. The local TraceDXF workflow only produces monochrome outline geometry from one raster image; the preparation steps below help you decide when that is enough.
The example uses a self-made gear-like mark as a repeatable engineering fixture. It is a shape example, not a customer brand, trademark clearance or proof that every logo will trace cleanly.
| Source or requirement | Preparation | Boundary to record |
|---|---|---|
| Single-color mark or silhouette | Use a clean, high-contrast raster and trace filled regions | Holes and bridges still need visual and geometry checks |
| Text in a logo | Keep the editable master; convert text to outlines in the editor | Font identity and text recognition are not preserved by this tool |
| Multicolor or gradient artwork | Use a color-layer workflow in a suitable editor | This page and the local tool do not validate color output |
| Photograph or detailed texture | Simplify or redraw before tracing | A threshold cannot restore missing edges or decide which texture matters |
Prepare the mark in five steps
Keep an editable master
Save the original logo artwork separately. Work on a copy so text, colors and proportions can be recovered if the monochrome trace is unsuitable.
Isolate the foreground
Crop unrelated objects and choose a contrasting background. Remove shadows, compression halos and decorative texture that should not become cutting geometry.
Protect defining details
Check the thinnest bridge, smallest hole, inner island and separate component in the binary preview. If a feature disappears, improve the source or threshold before export; do not assume node reduction will restore it.
Trace and inspect the geometry
Trace the filled shape, then select the result with a node tool or open it in a vector editor. Confirm that the output is paths, not only an embedded image, and that holes remain empty.
Set the handoff size
For cutting, set a physical width or height and measure the imported file. A pixel canvas is not a material dimension; SVG and DXF receivers may apply different unit settings.
Recorded gear-mark example
The self-made 512 × 512 PNG has a high-contrast gear-like mark with three holes. Its generated SVG and DXF are the same project showcase assets used for geometry checks; the manifest records hashes and parameters.
The example shows how to inspect a simple mark before delivery. It does not test text, multicolor artwork, arbitrary photographs, customer branding or native LightBurn import for this specific file.

Diagnose a logo trace before scaling it
| What changed | Next check |
|---|---|
| Letters became blobs or vanished | Keep the editable text master and convert text to paths in a suitable editor; this raster workflow does not identify fonts. |
| A hole or bridge disappeared | Compare the source and binary preview at the feature; use a clearer source or threshold before exporting. |
| The result has a background rectangle | Remove the background from the source or adjust foreground/background contrast. Do not delete geometry blindly. |
| The imported size is wrong | Measure the artwork bounds and compare mm/inch settings. Do not use visual scaling to hide a unit mismatch. |
Continue with the right file workflow
Use the method guide to choose outline versus centerline, the Inkscape guide for a complete desktop trace, and the browser tools only for their documented monochrome PNG/JPG input. Keep the original logo master outside the conversion result.
Sources and verification
The procedure uses the project’s self-made gear fixture, its recorded manifest and the Inkscape tracing documentation. The assets are engineering examples with explicit attribution; they do not establish trademark rights, universal software compatibility or fabrication safety.
